Left the city early. Seems like being with friends, rather than strangers, is more important this weekend. I'm doing an impromptu cook-out tomorrow. One thing before I leave...M. came over last night and hung out with me while I did the Comet paintings. They are batik of wax on rag paper with dyes, glitter fingernail polish, salt, and chrome. M. bought them as soon as I finished them. He thinks they are erotic! LOL They are comets!!!!!
I will have a site up by next week.
Yes we watched the address...rhetoric.
Now I am off for real, on a search for a big-brain man, and some relief.

Lastly, I have seen reports that people are emailing the major news networks requesting that the shots of the actual plane crashes into the WTC not be shown. They are offended. Good God. That is what happened. IT IS THE REALITY. Denial isn't going to help us. In fact, according to my European friends, we have already been sheltered from the most grisly photos. Maybe Americans need to see it in all of its truth so we can feel the reality of the situation.

Last night I watched Nightline and a guest on the program (sorry I don't know his name) was suggesting that we need to close our border with Canada. The Canadian/U.S. border has been the longest open/free border between any two countries. This man said that the Canadians were lax in security. I took a road trip through Canada, entering near Detroit, and went all of the way to Montreal before rentering the states. It took us two hours to get in and another two to get out. Canadians do their jobs. Why offend a country that has been with us through wars? a country that has values similiar to ours? isn't there enough going on without making an affront to our good neighbors to the north? STOP IT!
Thankfully Ted Koppel brought this man's argument back to some sense of logic. He said, "Do you mean that we should unite both countries and consider the borders of both as one?" (I am paraphrasing here) I don't think the man understood. In fact Koppel said it twice. Argh!

My friend that works in the news told me last night that he has been working 14-hour days. My first reaction was that he must be exhausted, yet I now realize that this subject, War In America, may be the first real subject people of my generation have had to deal with. Before September 11th I railed about how vapid we had become, how movie star news was so uppermost in our minds. But now I see that in a free world people are allowed to be giddy and worthless. Now we have something to really think about, something to unite us, something we need to be deadly serious about preventing. Perhaps, (do I dare say this), we needed something of this magnitude to happen so we would WAKE UP!

Letter to America:
Our family gathered together for the weekend. We needed to be together, to be thankful that we are all okay. Of course most of the talk and interaction related to the terrorism.
Many people arrived with flags on their cars and some wore red, white, and blue as a show of respect for our country. My family came to this country in 1750 and has been through and fought in many of the wars.
But this is a different war. A war of terrorism.
My nephew who is 12, feels compassion for those who died in the disaster. He admires the rescue workers, but on Sunday he revealed to me his real worry. He is terrified that America will be bombed.
Our government needs to ease up on this calling out of the troops (35,000 reservists), this talk of war. We have no taste for it. We are becoming anxious. We are afraid that this will quickly get out of hand.
I don't understand why we need troops. This is not a traditional, if I can even use that word, war. It is about a specific group of people, terrorists. Isn't that a matter for a specialized group like the Delta Force? Take down the RIGHT people.
If we put military all across our land in a visible way how does that thwart terrorism? And if troops had been in New York and Washington D.C. on September 11, 2001 how would that have changed the events?
Today I am placing a banner outside. I have painted one word on it. It says PEACE.
Tomorrow I will be burying a time capsule. It is filled with news clipping, a video, prayers, photos from my trip to lower Manhattan last summer, four of the anti-terrorism paintings I just did, photos of my family I took over the weekend, a little American flag, a yin/yang charm, and other things I collected from family members over the weekend.
I plan to unearth it in 10 years. I hope we will have made the right decisions and that America still enjoys the freedom and vibrancy that we had before September 11, 2001.
